MASTER AND SYSTEM PLANNING
Airport sponsors face a major challenge in providing for orderly, timely,
and coordinated airport development to capitalize on near-term opportunities
without compromising the long-term capability of the airports to serve the aviation
needs of the region they serve. An airport master plan provides the necessary
vision and direction to accommodate growth in aviation activity over, typically,
a 20-year period, and serves as a guide for logical, balanced, and feasible airport
development, consistent with the goals of the airport sponsor and the needs of
the local communities and airport tenants. In addition to being a roadmap for
airport development, a master plan often serves as the foundation for project
funding agreements between an airport sponsor and the FAA, tenant airlines, and
other key stakeholders.
